About Us

The Virginia Helmsmen are an independent indoor percussion ensemble based in Danville, Virginia, made up of students, ages 12 - 22. Our membership consists of students from Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee. We are a not-for-profit organization which is totally self sponsored by our members and community. Our staff and consultants are all volunteers and they fit into an elite group of some of the finest musicians and clinicians in the indoor percussion activity.

Each year, the Helmsmen perform in exhibitions and regional competitions in Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Ohio. We are active members of Winter Guard International (WGI), the main governing body of the indoor percussion activity and the Atlantic Indoor Association (AIA). Each April, the Helmsmen travel to WGI World Championships to showcase their talents alongside the top indoor percussion ensembles in the world.
